Grateful for the Good Things

Recently, I have been reading Make Something Good Today by Erin & Ben Napier. One night, I was watching their show Home Town and enjoyed their renovations of the homes in their small town. There are parallels between their town and our town of Washington…the train coming through town, homes that are on tree-lined streets in the downtown area and the community of connection. Their authentic spirit and vision of transforming homes brings an excitement of creativity and joy. Creating and making something new or repurposed is one of my favorite pursuits.

The words “make something good today” speaks to finding something positive in our day-to day. There are days when it’s hard to see the good. In these times of uncertainty, it is difficult to focus on the good. Stress, a new normal and other challenges cloud the smallest glimmers of good.

Our boys have been dressing up in their superhero costumes of Batman and Robin. They have created an elaborate system of Gotham City with blocks, marble ramps and Legos. They also have been watching the tv series of Batman with Adam West. The graphics of “POW!” and”BAM!” make us laugh and takes us back to a simpler time. When they are wearing their capes, they feel invicible and ride their bikes with determination as they act out scenarios in our driveway. I think of times when I have to face challenges and need to have that child-like wonder to “POW!” and “BAM!” through each day.

Being at home during this time, has made myself slow down and focus on the things that matter. The birds start their singing early in the morning and it awakens myself from sleepiness. I see the sun shining through the trees and think this is a new day to find joy. It is easier to dwell on the negative. Our minds have a way of distracting us and pulls us from the good around us, no matter how small or big.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” May we seek to make each day good. May we find ways to do good to others. May we be grateful for good things, our tribe and moments that bring joy and peace.
