As a child, I took piano lessons. My first teacher was Mrs. McVey. After school, my second grade teacher Mrs. Pawlitz would pile her kids and myself into her station wagon for lessons since we all went to Mrs. McVey. I would go first and then her kids would take their lessons. Later on, I would take lessons from Mrs. Briggs. One day a week after school another student Amy and I would walk down Chippewa Street for our lessons. Music has always been a part of my life. I enjoy a variety of genres: big band, musicals, James Taylor, 80’s music, Billy Joel and many more styles. We are always listening to music in the house with the boys. Luke and Drew have dance moves that are entertaining.
At Christmas, Luke received a guitar from my mom and wants to take lessons. It’s been many years since I have played guitar, but I am thinking maybe he and I can learn together. My Dad had a guitar and as a child I would play Dad’s guitar.
This week my father-in-law said he and my mother-in-law bought me something for helping them. I really enjoy the small things in life: a new book, working in the garden, spending time with great friends and family. I also enjoy the occasional scratch lottery ticket. My grandma always purchased scratch tickets and she would let me scratch the tickets to see if she won anything. It is the small things that matter to me.
When my father-in-law said they bought me something, I thought, “I wonder if it is sewing items?” My in-laws are into auctions and at times when they see sewing items, they purchase since I enjoy sewing. My father-in-law included a picture so I opened the picture up and it was this piano. I have been wanting to play again for some time. I truly was not expecting to receive this piano.
Matt and his dad maneuvered the piano into the house this week. I went through the box of sheet music that came with the piano. It is so fun to go through things. In the box was some classical music, hymns, and Disney Music. The one book of music stood out to me it had butterflies on it and is entitled Something Special.
I have been playing the piano this week. One song that I have enjoyed playing is “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” This song is meaningful on so many levels.
“A Dream is A Wish your Heart Makes”
When you’re fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true
Robyn,
I really like that you are taking the time to do these each week. Up until this week I had never heard you play the piano and I was impressed by how well you played. I hope that you will continue to take the time to play. Seeing the boys take up music would be fun. We love you.
Thanks Matt…I really enjoy the piano. Your Dad was very thoughtful in purchasing it. Thank you for your love and support. Love you always, Robyn
Robyn, Your postings give such precious moments of joy – lifts my spirits and makes my soul shout praises to our God of wonderfully loving gifts like the beauty of music. Thanks for sharing with all of us these very personal memories – it’s really special in this one to remember the joy of having had your dear daddy and your ever so special grandma Lavern in our lives! Much love to you and your precious family ~
Joan, music does have a way with healing. I am glad these memories bring joy to your heart. Love to you and Don~
Robyn this message is so true and gives all of us a good reminder. As Dale and I prayed tonight I thanked God for those little things like, a smile, a hug, support from others, forgiveness, friendship, love, a pat on the back and several other things. Sometimes we take for granted the small stuff but it is the small stuff that keeps us going daily, hourly, minute by minute. Thank you for sharing once again. We need to hold onto to the small acts or things and forever be grateful for them.
Thank you Cheryl. The small things make all of the difference. We need more of the small things each day. Much love to you my Go Go Girl, Robyn
