A Spoonful of Sugar and Rest

This week, I have needed to focus on rest. The sickness bug hit and it was vicious. In the day to day, there are chores to do, work, friends, family and other responsibilities. This week, I came to the conclusion that the only way to get better was to rest per doctor’s orders.

My husband was a great caretaker. He would come and and say, “It’s time for your medicine.” He reminded me of Mary Poppins when she sang “A spoonful of sugar and the medicine goes down”, but without his singing. I so wished the medicine had sugar in it or some bubblegum flavoring…the medicine I enjoyed taking as a child. Everyday this week, he asked what I needed. He always is showing care and especially this week with myself ill.

At work, I have a basket that I call my “Poppins” basket. The students love it. It has many compartments where I keep my Sharpies, pens, scissors and a variety of items needed when I teach. Sometimes I will call a student and say, “Rylie Poppins, can you get my basket?” They start to giggle as they make a connection about Mary Poppins and her magical bag. This week, I left work early due to being sick. One of my students said, “Mrs. B, where is your Poppins basket?” I shared that it was in a particular spot. As I was packing my belongings to go home to recuperate, this particular student came over with a sticker from the basket. He said, “Here Mrs. B. You get a star sticker for trying your best today.” The sticker had some “magical” power as I needed a smile and encouragment. Not long after, more little hands were coming up with stickers to put on my coat as I was leaving.

It is difficult when circumstances interrupt our plans. This week there were things that had to be adapted and some plans left undone. When things occur, it is hard to let go and just be. The next day will come and we start again.

My heart is grateful from compassion of others. This week, reading emails and messages from co-workers and friends warmed my heart. Seeing the words, “What do you need?”, “What can I do for you?” “I miss seeing you.” all brought joy to my heart.

May we find joy in the unexpected. As I healed, I listened to the leaves blowing in the breeze. Just a simple aspect of nature brought some joy. May we reach out to others in their time of need. A simple hello or message will bring caring. May we always take time to rest and just be.
