When I think of gifts, I think of boxes or bags with an unknown item in them. Wrapping paper, bows, tissue paper, and tape that cannnot be pried apart are some of the aspects of gifts that come to mind. It has always been a joy to give gifts to others. Thinking of what others enjoy, makes the gift-giving experience authentic and personal.
This month has been unexpected. We were supposed to go on vacation to Disney, but the week before we were to leave, I had an inkling to cancel our trip. The next day it was officially cancelled, due to the sickness occuring in our world. Also, school is out of session for an extended time. Working from home, helping our sons complete their schoolwork, helping our neighbors and family during this time are things we are doing with the unexpected change. This month also marks what would have been our son Hope’s 2nd birthday. Even though we celebrate/honor our son by visiting his resting place, it is a time of sadness because of losing him unexpectedly.
When unexpected things happen, it causes anxiety, stress and uneasiness. We know we are not in control, but for myself I like to think I am. The past couple of weeks, there has been more solemness. Yes, responsibilities need to get done, but there is also a realization of what is important. Lately, I have been limiting time on social media, playing board games or completing crafts with our boys when their schoolwork is done and sitting in the stillness when my work responsibilities are complete for the day…although uneasiness is still there.
Our boys enjoy getting packages. When they see our UPS driver Glen drive up the driveway, they get excited. Sometimes their packages are from saving up their allowance they earned. At other times, it’s a gift from someone for their birthdays or for the holidays. There are times when I have ordered something and I forgot what I ordered. When the box appears on the porch, I wonder “What is in that box?” There are times when a card is sent in the mail and it is a welcome suprise…an unexpected gift.
In these times of uneasiness, may we think of the the unexpected gifts in our lives. It could be memories that have brought joy. Unexpected gifts can come in the form of a funny meme sent by a friend. Receiving a note in the mail, someone checking on your well-being or having a random UPS package on your porch all ways to receive the unexpected.
May we hold onto gifts received that have brought joy. May we seek opportunities to encourage others as a gift. When change occurs, may we hold onto hope for each moment. Gifts…at times unexpected…at times a happy surprise…at times given…at times received…wrapped up in a variety of ways.
“Only by giving are you able to receive more than what you already have.” (Quote by Jim Rohn)
