This summer, I have been practicing the idea of being still. Some ways I have focused on quietness, has been through reading, biking, walking, being with friends and our boys. Life is busy and at times, seems like it is non-stop. In comparison to other summers, this summer has been one that I have treasured more so. When you go through times that are tough, it makes you reflect and realize what is important.
During the week I have been walking some mornings with a friend. Whether it’s a park in town or along the riverfront trail, there is something about seeing each day start with the rising sun. Spending time with friends and being with nature are two of my favorite things.
One of my favorite places to go that is also serene, is Long Row Lavender Farms in Wright City, MO. When you go to Long Row, it is peaceful and beautiful and allows for quiet space. About two years ago, I heard about Long Row and decided to go visit. I am always up for a road trip, even if it isn’t far.
I love to travel and drive. My dad was the one who taught me all of the side streets growing up in the city. When friends go with me places, the inside joke is “I will always get you home.” It’s an adventure for myself to find new ways or back roads to get to and from places. Sometimes when I take the kids on outings, they say, “Mom are we taking a shortcut?” as they sing the song “Holiday Road” from National Lampoon’s Vacation. A shortcut to them means another way home, but is not always a shortcut as it may be a scenic route.
At Long Row, you will see a field of lavender when you arrive. They have a variety of items including: soap, candles, home decor, and my favorite lavender brownies. I never knew so much existed with lavender. There are tables inside where you can play chess or tic-tac-toe and they have samples of lavender treats. The music in the store is uplifting and you feel joy when you are at Long Row. Outside there are tables and a swing and our boys love to sit and watch the butterflies flutter across the flowers.
Lavender represents refinement, grace and elegance. When you look at a lavender plant, it has simplicity with its stems and small purplish flowers. Simplicity means being easy to understand or uncomplicated. May we all enjoy the things that bring simplicity into our lives.
